Swagata Purkayastha, Ph.D., J.D., LL.M., has over 10 years of deep technical expertise and 6 years of valuable patent related experience. Her practice focuses on all aspects of patent prosecution, opinion work, and client counseling in the field of Pharmaceuticals, Biotechnology, Medical Devices, Nanotechnology, and the Cosmetic and Beauty Industry. Leveraging her considerable experience in research & development, Swagata has worked with several clients to identify patentable subject matter, help bring those innovations to market and safeguard their Intellectual Property.
Dr. Purkayastha brings with her a rich international experience as well. She is admitted to the Bar Council in India. She has been deeply involved in the preparation and prosecution of (U.S., PCT and Indian) patent applications for the chemical, pharmaceutical, biomedical and biotechnology industries. Swagata has prior experience of more than a decade in inter- disciplinary research at the cross-section of Chemistry, Biochemistry, Immunology and Molecular Biology. Her doctoral research and her stint as a knowledge scientist further honed her skills at evaluating technologies for therapeutics and diagnostics in Cancer and other disease pathologies. Her training in the legal sciences coupled with her extensive research background allows her to grasp and appreciate the many nuances of patents with a greater degree of clarity and maturity. This unique combination of depth and perspective has enabled her to create a niche for herself in specific IP areas.
Swagata worked as a law clerk in an IP Boutique Firm in the greater DC region. In this role, she was involved in patent procurement in areas of polymer chemistry, food chemistry, cosmetics, new chemical entities and formulations, and novel solid forms including polymorphs, co-crystals, and amorphous forms of compounds. In addition to this, she has prior expertise in providing patentability and infringement opinions and analysis for freedom-to-operate. During her law studies, Swagata interned for the Honorable Jimmie V. Reyna at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. As part of her pro-bono work, she helped as a law clerk in the Public Interest Division of the Office of The Attorney General of the District of Columbia. Apart from her professional interests that span across Science and Law, Swagata has varied interest in music and the visual arts. She is also an accomplished dancer trained in the Indian Classical dance form of Odissi. Swagata is multilingual with native fluency in Hindi and Bengali.
