Kevin Cyr is a Registered Patent Attorney and is Of Counsel at Billion & Armitage. He practices in all facets of intellectual property law. Kevin has over 18 years of experience in counseling clients and developing trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets and patents in the mechanical, electrical and chemical arts.
Kevin prides himself on working closely with his clients to better understand their technology and business needs. He can assist clients in the preparation and prosecution of U.S. and foreign patent and trademark applications as well as in the licensing of his clients’ intellectual property. Kevin has secured patent and trademark protection for companies ranging in size from start-ups to members of the Fortune 500. He also counsels clients and drafts opinions on patentability, infringement, validity, valuation and other related issues.
Kevin has the perspective of having worked with clients as both in-house patent counsel and as outside counsel. He has substantial expertise in developing patent portfolios for start-up and early stage companies. In addition and unique among patent attorneys, Kevin is an entrepreneur. He has been an owner and officer in several local companies. He has helped to develop all facets of these technology and manufacturing companies. He has worked with angel investors and venture capitalists to fund start-ups and has a solid understanding of the process. He has also worked extensively with management and engineers to develop infrastructures and to overcome the obstacles faced by almost every start-up. In essence, he has developed a hands-on working understanding of the problems faced by his clients as well as workable solutions. He uses this to develop strategies and solutions that make sense to his clients.
Kevin received his undergraduate degree from The University of Louisville, College of Biological Sciences (B.S., Zoology, 1990), his graduate degree from Old Dominion University (M.S., Biology with a concentration in Biotechnology, 1992) and his law degree from The University of Pittsburgh, School of Law (J.D., 1997). Prior to attending law school, Kevin worked in both as a biomedical researcher.
In addition to his in-house experience, Kevin has practiced law at Popovich & Wiles and Briggs & Morgan, P.A. in Minneapolis, MN. He is admitted to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office, the United States District Court, District of Minnesota, and the Minnesota Supreme Court.
